How To Install Plank Laminate Flooring And Maintain It

Hardwood is the look most people are going for in their homes, but it is a more expensive option. Instead, you can get beautiful, stylish designs of plank laminate flooring in maple or pine or even bamboo laminate for much less, and you often have more options in terms of patterns, colors and designs. They are easy to install yourself, and they add a warm glow to any room.

Benefits of Maple and Pine

Maple laminate flooring is an option that is becoming extremely popular and has many options to choose from. There are a few top producers of maple that each offer a different asset in their product.

Plank Laminate Flooring

Westhollow is a top producer that has different types of maple to appeal to more people. They have a Sugarcane maple, that is a rich honey color, or even Roman Hard Maple, which is almost white. Using these products will also only cost you about $2.50 a square foot.

Other popular companies are BHK and Quick Step, offering stylish maple variations that include classy beveled edges, rich woods that highlight their natural wood grain and of course, very easy to install applications. Pine laminate flooring also comes in a variety of tones, from very pale white, to a deep, ruddy color. You can also find some pine laminates for as low as $1.30 a square foot, making it a cost efficient option.

How to Install

Laminated wood flooring is made in easy to connect planks. It is tongue in groove style, so it simple clicks together to hold into place. It can also be glued in the groove but is usually not necessary. No matter what material of planks you choose, the method of installation will be the same and can easily be done on your own with a bit of preparation.

1. Measure the area of your room to determine the amount of planks you will need. Remove all baseboards and trims.

2. Lay down a foam underlay or sound barrier to help insulate the flooring.

3. Lay the first row of planks down starting from the end of the room opposite the door. You will want to leave 1/4" of space between the end plank and the wall to leave room for changes in the wood with varying temperatures.

4. Here you can get creative. You can decide what pattern you want to create by placing your planks side by side or skewed, so their seams form a pattern in the flooring. You may need to cut any planks to size that don't fit.

5. Connect your planks together by fitting them into the grooves and clicking them into place, trimming them with a miter saw if necessary.

When all is done, you can replace your baseboards and trim, which will cover the 1/4" gap you left around the outer edges.

Maintenance

Laminated wood flooring is shiny and warm, but it although it is durable, it can be damaged. Be sure to use a recommended laminate floor cleaner or a homemade solution with vinegar and water in order to preserve the sheen of your floors. Any cleaner with harsh chemicals or too much ammonia will destroy the sealant on the laminate. If you are careful, your plank laminate flooring could last you a long time.
