DIY Laminated Wood Flooring Installation Guide

Wood is far more appealing and warm than linoleum or stone, and it doesn't take that much effort to install. You can transform the look of your house by just changing your floors to laminated wood flooring, and you won't have to worry about time-consuming maintenance or installation fees. Hardwood is easy to clean and very durable. You can choose from some of the most popular products, like Pergo, Wilsonart or Norske Skog and start your own project that will make a huge difference.

How to Install Flooring

1. To properly prepare for hardwood laminate flooring, you first need to measure the entire space that will be covered. Having these measurements when you purchase your supplies will enable the vendor to determine exactly how much you need.

2. Buy all the supplies you need, including floorboards, glue, foam insulation or a sound barrier to lay down and a spacer.

3. Lay out your flooring at home for about 2 days to acclimatize before you begin.

4. Remove all baseboards, door trims and carpeting. If the floor is linoleum, concrete or tile, nothing needs to be removed. Just be sure the surface is level.

5. Place down the foam underlay as a sound barrier.

6. Lay down the first row of boards, without gluing, to check spacing. Start in a corner at the far side of the room, and place the groove side against the wall. Use your 1/4" spacer block between the board and the wall to leave a space that allows the wood to expand in weather changes. Saw the boards to size if need be.

7. Ensure your first row is straight, and then apply glue to the grooves of each board and click them into place. Use a damp cloth to immediately wipe off excess glue.

8. Continue to the next row, and glue all boards into place, making sure to leave your 1/4" of space between each end board and the wall.

9. Allow the glue on your laminate hardwood floors to dry, and open windows to ventilate. Replace all baseboards and door trims.

Your laminate hardwood floor will look like it was professionally installed, with only a little effort on your behalf. The materials are designed to be quite user friendly so that more people can perform their renovations themselves. You can save a lot of money if you do some research and complete the job alone, making it more feasible to switch to laminated wood flooring sooner.
